"With the marine park out there, and all the migratory birds and artificial reefs, this just cleans up that last piece in the easternmost part of the marine park. "There was no appetite for that kind of stuff out there," District 4 Commissioner Dave Piech told the News Journal. The county rejected the request for the lease amendment after widespread public opposition. The developer caused an uproar in 2018 when it asked the county for a lease amendment that would allow a company to build a marina, RV park, hotel and other waterfront recreational activities in the area. The parcel of land in question is currently owned by Shoreline Developers of Florida, INC. As part of a settlement from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, six communities in western Florida were chosen to either have new parks created or existing ones expanded.
